What We Will Cover

Be it a prayer, affirmation, a wish, hope or dream, capture your treasured thoughts with a message in a tiny treasured locket. Customise the design of your locket with embellishments or a theme to make your piece to your own unique style. Tracey's innovative technique to create a self-integrated hinge with a fastening snap clasp will complete the piece.

During this course you will work on the dry construction techniques involved in making the carcass shell. You will make a refined elegant hinge from silver clay that fits flush, sitting neatly into the piece for a streamlined look to the inverted square pyramid design. Finally we will add a suspension bail. This project will expand your skills in metal clay.

The project is split into four parts, each with its own video tutorial. Total running time is 2 hours 25 minutes. There is also an additional bonus video about soldering techniques.

  • Roll and texturing the clay
  • Dry construction into a square pyramid
  • Create pillow domes for the lid
  • Construct the integrated hinge
  • Insert the hinge into the body of the piece
  • Make a functioning clasp fastening
  • Optional detailed syringe work or other embellishments
  • Rivet the hinge and clasp
  • Create a snap fastening clasp
  •  Add a three dimensional suspension bail

You will be encouraged to post pictures of your work and Tracey will give you ongoing feedback. You will also be able to join in the discussion with other group members. You will be able to pick up heaps of experience from each other.
Please note that if you want to sell any jewellery that you make using silver clay, then in the UK you are legally required to add your hallmark to any item weighing 7.78gm or more. Further information is available in the Hallmarking page.
