Terry Kovalcik

Terry Kovalcik is one of the World’s leading precious metal clay jewellery artists. After years of more than 25 years working as an illustrator, he was drawn to metal clay as a way to bring form and movement into his art. Many of his pieces are made of multiple elements that hang, dangle and swing with the movement of the body. This gives the piece life and adds an element of whimsy.

After sketching his designs on paper, it’s the process of creating, sculpting and assembling these pieces that are most gratifying.

He’s become passionate about making boxes that allow him to work on both the inside and outside designs with the mystery of its interior and the secrets that can be hidden inside. These little surprises are special gifts to the wearer that they can choose to share with others.

Terry creates a sense of colour and space through the use of various surface treatments - from highly polished silver to dark, textural matte finishes.

Seeing these 3D forms come alive nourishes his creativity.  As he continues to work in metal clay, Terry finds that these wearable objects have a unique ability to capture the inspiration he sees in the world around him.

“Working in metal clay allows me to go beyond two-dimensional space.”

Craftworx is delighted to have Terry visit our studios in 2012. Initial demand for places has been so high that we have agreed that Terry will deliver his master class in two back to back sessions.

Debbie Carlton

Debbie Carlton is a jeweller and sculptor working with polymer clay, metal clay and mixed media. She is an enthusiastic and experienced teacher and she has published articles in magazines as well as several books.

Debbie's bold and innovative jewellery designs often combine metal and polymer clay to create colourful and stylish one-off pieces. She is intrigued by the relationship of colour and texture and what can be achieved to create shape and form through modelling and a few simple tools.

She is a passionate advocate of these dynamic and innovative products and her ‘mission’ is to raise the profile of polymer clay work in the UK.

Debbie teaches introductory and advanced classes for both metal clay (PMC or Art Clay Silver) and polymer clay from her workshop in North West London. Her approach to both her work and teaching is to share her knowledge, create beautiful and wearable objects and to constantly evolve with new ideas in her own practice and inspire others to do the same.

Joy Funnell

Joy Funnell was making jewellery for many years as a hobby before she encountered silver clay in 2005 and was hooked. Within a year she trained up to Senior Art Clay Instructor, gave up the day job and leapt into a full time career as a jewellery artisan.

She took her existing passion for enamelling to a new level when in 2009 she became the first person to be made a Craftsman of the Guild of Enamellers for six pieces of work all made using silver clay and enamel.

Joy says “the traditional view of many enamellers has been that you cannot enamel on silver clay. I knew this was wrong and wanted to prove my point. It is great to see respected enamellers looking at silver clay with a new understanding these days.”

As well as running her own business Joy has a part time role as Assistant Editor (Technical) for Metal Clay Artist Magazine and has been a committed participant in the 2011 Bird a Week Challenge.

Joy is passionate about colour and texture in her work and she teaches all levels of silver clay and enamelling workshops from her base in Hastings. She also travels to teach and taught at the Art Clay World UK conferences in 2009 and 2010 and the Guild of Enamellers conference in 2011. She taught a pre conference workshop and gave conference presentations at the Metal Clay World Conference in Chicago in 2011.

Her work has been featured in many magazines and publications including Making Jewellery, Make Jewellery, Art Clay World UK Newsletter, Art Clay Society Newsletter, Metal Clay Today and Metal Clay Artist Magazine. She has written step by step articles and features for various magazines and for the second year running her work is in the Art and Design of Metal Clay Jewelry calendar. Her work has won awards in competitions around the world.

Joy is an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, always willing to share her knowledge but only too aware there is so much more for her to learn out there.
